Dale Leadbeater – a wetland evaluator and
botanist, and her colleague. and co-author of the work
Sean
Spisani
Topic:
Twilight
to 2000:
the Greening of Ontario 10,000 years ago glacial ice was just retreating
from Ontario leaving behind a raw,
exposed landscape occupied by mega-mammals that included Mastodons, Short-faced
Bears and Giant Buffalo.
In the midst of this ancient climate change, the ancestral First Nations
arrived and the combined influences of climate,
human trade and landscape management by wildlife and people conspired to sculpt
the landscape we know today.
We track the evolution of our flora in a brief overview of these dynamic
changes and provide a glimpse
into the twilight of prehistoric Ontario.
The
history of Ontario's landscape provides valuable context for land managers
and restoration ecologists
when designing our future environments.
