Around the fringe of the Canadian Shield are great series of escarpments and low plateaus on limestone, dolomite and gypsum strata of Paleozoic age.
These are slightly soluble rocks that everywhere display features of karstic solution. This presentation will review the author’s studies of them,
beginning on the Great Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland, continuing through Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta, and up to the western shores of Great Bear Lake, NT.
Features to be illustrated will include karren fields, alvars, sinkholes, blue lakes, disappearing rivers and lakes, caves, productive aquifers, and the many problems of conservation
in the face of the quarrying, mining and urban development pressures
of today.
